Kinky Boots Factory

Well I watched the movie at the beginning of this year for inspiration. If you haven’t watched this movie do its so much fun.

On my visit to Auckland last week I was lucky to visit a leather manufacturing company. I just loved being surrounded by all the richness of leather, knowledge and craftsmanship.
I felt like I was walking through the Kinky Boots factory & I was so pleased to see there are some companies that can remain in New Zealand, and long may they prosper.

In the words of the Kinky Boots Movie

“The man from Milan, he say yes”........

Wanaka Passion For Fashion

It was a full house at Wanaka’s Passion for Fashion.
I had lots of fun Judging the Designers Competition. I was happy that the winner was a stand out piece of a woolen hot pants, come roman princess ensemble, that easily stole the show, making my job easy!

Loved working with 47 Frocks & their amazing creation featuring the Von Avi V V Belt.

Fashion Trend, Australia

Editors Choice!

Womans Day NZ have just given Von Avi the Editors Choice on page 48 of the latest edition for the Cocktail Queen!
Now available in a range of coloured linings. My favorite is Fushia, Turquoise is divine, Red is exciting, and you can always do with black.

The Cocktail Queen is great for a special event, and is equally at home as a casual about town accessory.

Rosemount Australian Fashion Week

RAFW was fantastic!!
We meet some amazing people and saw some very exciting cutting edge design and it wasn’t all New Zealanders either!

I thought I was dressed for the occasion in my newly purchased 5 inch heels, but alas the Australians were far too tall for me!

We had a fab time in Sydney checking out all the sights in the evening!

Loved the Aurelio Costarella show with lots of leather, fishtails and metal!

Absolutely Fabulous Colours

We are now producing Cocktail Queens with an absolutely fabulous range of internal lining colours

Wanaka Airshow 2010

Von Avi "The Movie"

For those of you that didn’t get to see our movie entry for the Air New Zealand Innovation award, I have posted it here so you can check it out.

Avatar

Well you must have all been to see Avatar by now. I sat right up close to the screen and was totally absorbed by the 3d effects, loved it.
My beautiful husband Greg, was the leading hand for building the flying fleet, it wasn’t all animation. In fact probably alot more work than building one that flies.
Our handbags are built using the same technique, as the Avatar helicopters!
Only we don’t use any glue at Von Avi!
Have a look at some of the making of the aircraft Greg helped to build.

Happy New Year

2009 was a very exciting year for Von Avi, and congratulations to all those winners in the Amelia competition.
Von Avi are excited to anonce a new stockist, Decode on Camp Street, Queenstown.
Decode is a very interesting shop, full of creative design clothing and also some great art and furniture. Decode features David Truebridge’s furniture & light fitttings also.

Now for a funny Xmas story.....
Well I was off to get my xmas tree and just before I jumped in the car I received a phone call. Putting my Von Avi handbag on the roof of the car to retrieve my phone I jumped in the car and drove off with the Gal About Town on the roof.
2kms down the road traveling at 70kms/hr, I wondered what that was bouncing down the road in the reavison mirror......
I am please to report that the Gal About Town has now been tested off the the roof of a car at 70kms undamaged, and a few extra petena marks to add to its life story!
Needless to say I got the tree, opened the presents & drank the wine!

Contemplating wearing your Von Avi bag naked?

If you find yourself wondering what to wear with your Von Avi handbag, give Carmel McCormick a call.
This is the beautiful Linda body painted as a sexy maid.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending a gathering of amazing women in Oamaru at a Her Business function arranged by Sue Morton.

This is the cover of their September Issue with another fantastic painting by Carmel.

Sue Morton of Waikaki Bacon and Ham, runs a very strong and supportive
Her Business network from Oamaru.
Her Business Magazine is owned by Annah Stretton, a truely inspirational New Zealand fashion designer and business woman.
Sue is standing next to a Stich and Bitch poster, a great name for a very clever sewing kitset, making sewing fun!

Gallery 33

Gallery 33 is the most amazing haven of Art & Jewellery I have seen in one shop.
Greg & I both found our engagement rings, by Barry Clarke, here and we also had my wedding ring made here by Anne Culy.
Von Avi’s hand bags look fantastic in the window, and we really wanted Wanaka to be able to come and see for themselves the exciting business that they have all got behind and supported. Thank you Wanaka !
A chance to have a closer look at the dress we designed for fashion week as well, thank you to Natalie Norman

Very soon we will be stocking our hand bags in Queenstown at Angle Divine & working our way up the country.

Watch this space for a stockist near you, or email us if you think your town has a great shop where you would like to see our Von Avi

Coming Home

After having a look around at the shops in the city & thanking the kind folk at the Auckland City Council Art Dept & my good friend Andrea I headed for the airport in the thick of a bus strike.
Unfortunately I received a phone call from Greg saying that our 5-year-old boy Louis was very sick & he was going to have to drive him to hospital in Dunedin.
I can’t thank Air NZ enough for redirecting my flights to Dunedin & giving me a lay over in the Koru Club (Absolutely decided this is the way to pass time at an airport!)
Unfortunately Louis was very sick. Greg headed out for some supplies on Saturday & I suggested we better get a copy of the Michael Hill’s book, Toughen Up. Greg & I have been taking split shifts between tending to Louis & reading our way through the Dunedin Hospital experience.

Not a day goes past at the hospital without a handbag tour!

Louis has made a full recovery & we made it back to control central in Wanaka.

Business in the hub

Auckland really is a hub of business. With the help of my chauffer Clivi Melling, we managed to cover a lot of territory & make some very interesting appointments.
We only got lost the once!
I loved being able to talk to business with people face to face, as I do spend a lot of my time in my office in Wanaka with the computer & the telephone as my no one companions.
There is a lot of pleasure in seeing the excitement on faces as they experience our handbags for the first time, especially as we had spent a long time developing every detail of our product. As chief handbag wrangler I am perfecting my personal handbag tour.

As I headed for home around 6.30 walking down Queen Street I came across what looked like a party at the Michael Hill Jewellers Shop. I crossed the Road & asked the well-dressed bouncer at the door if Michael Hill was inside. He replied yes. Greg & I had watched an interview on television earlier in the year that was a real turning point in our decision making process, for the launch of our brand, so I was excited about the prospect to meet this most inspiration man & thank him for sharing his wisdom.
I realised that this must have been the launch, of the new, look for Michael Hill Jewellers. I asked the manager at the door if it would be ok if I introduced myself to Michael Hill. With his blessing I trundled into the shop with my trusty red trolley & introduced myself. I relish meeting inspirational people in business. I couldn’t hold back my enthusiasm, and trust Mr Hill into a brief on the spot hand bag tour, thanking him for his own enthusiasm. That said I turned to leave the party when I was swamped by a group of ladies that turned out to be a very amazing experience.
One of the beautiful ladies was a girl I had baby sat as a 15 year old, another demanded an immediate hand bag tour & insisted that she wanted to purchase two of our bags & the third lady, after hearing a brief story of our wedding, decided she would like to write a story for the wedding magazine My Weddings that she wrote for.
It was then that I looked over to Michael & though that I should make a quick departure, as an uninvited guest to this inaugural opening.
I stood outside the shop & listened to the speeches with great admiration. The new interior design of the shop was outstanding & the diamonds leaped 7 sparkled their way out of the cabinets with the newly invented lighting system. Thank you Michael Hill.

Cocktails & Canapes

With my hot date in tow, Andrea Ord direct form the Art Department at The Auckland City Council, we headed out for a fun evening immersed in Trelise Cooper fashion & fun. The venue Hopetoune Alpha is outstanding & a great turn out to support the cause for Habit.

It was lovely to meet a lot of interesting people, including the beautiful Tina Cross & of course Trelise Cooper. The lovely ladies that had put a lot of effort in to organising the night were very happy with the turn out & support for such a fantastic cause.
Very inspiring to meet successful & interesting women.

Myself with Trelise Cooper

Loved having a brief chat with Tina Cross who played a few Joany Mitchel songs.
What a beautiful lady.
My favourite photo of these men checking to see what is in their goodie bag.

On the road again

A glorious day to head north, sunny & blue skies, lots of snow on the mountains, & spectacular views of Mt Aspiring & Mt Cook.

By the time I had reached Christchurch I had given out 5 business cards, from people wanting to know where I got my handbag from. The Air New Zealand staff are like magnets, I’m sure they can smell the aircraft materials. The male security officers at the X ray machines completely swamp around me with intrigue, & before I know it they are calling my name for the next flight.

A Fabulous Cocktail Party

Heading off to Auckland tomorrow for this fabulous cocktail party & looking forward Trelise’s fashion show & meeting her lovely staff that we worked along side with building the Habitat house for Freida.

It has been a good unwinding session after Air New Zealand Fashion Week, it certainly was a huge event & by all accounts everyone has been regrouping.

Wanaka has turned on some stunning spring weather including a major snow storm last Saturday, the longest winter by a long shot, always a great opportunity for creativity.

Von Avi is working on our Man Bag Range, that was highly sort after, by eagerly awaiting fashionista blokes!

The glad rags are going back in the case & its back to Servilles for another exciting do for the big party.

Pammy on the cat walk

It was alot of fun to go along to the A*Muse show, a special thanks to Pieter Steward for the tickets.

Special thanks goes out to our No. 1 Handbag Wrangler Jane Adcock who made Air New Zealand Fashion Week a fantastic experience.
A dedicated worker, girlfriend & fashionista!
Not to mention a dab hand at installing the kitchen at the Habitat "Nail it with Love" build on Saturday when I know she would have loved to be on the couch!

Nailing Fashion Week

Waiting for my cousin Anthony to pick up the table & chairs, we never let an opportunity go by to show off our beautiful Hand Bags on the street out side the entrance to ANZ Fashion Week

Our Last job was to be part of the Nail it with Love team on the Viaduct, building a house for Frieda & her 3 children.
It was a great experience, lots of really fantastic woman & we donated a Barfly Handbag to the Trelise Cooper team who will be auctioning it off to raise money for their trip to Thailand, where they are heading to build for Habitat housing.

Day five

Heading across the poontoon at Viaduct Harbour to ANZFW

Von Avi use the same security guards as Pamela Anderson!

Pieter Steward, Head of Air New Zealand Fashion Week, poses for us with her new Von Avi Barfly.
Pieter came by our exhibition, to offer us  invitations to The A* Muse Fashion  Show by  Richie Rich featuring Pamela Anderson. This is the first time New Zealand has shown an American Collection.
Not front row, but we are very excited by such an amazing opportunity.

A definite show stopper

Thursday was another day of non stop rave reviews by everyone that saw our Hand Bags. The Audience of the Designer Selection Shows poured by our stand again & we were again given the classic comment of "what a show stopper" by everyone.

We presented Pieter Stewart a Bar Fly at the Front Row of the Trelise Cooper show on Wednesday night &she
came by our stand yesterday to thank us personally.
We stayed after the show to relax in the Moet Lounge last night & loved the interior design & chandelier installation by Sharon Finn

Von Avi Live on the Cat walk at fashion week

The Westpac tent was full to the brim as Von Avi stutted their "Metal Fashion with Attitude" down the runway.
It was an amazing sight as our iconic outfit with the Barfly & B.B.B. emmerged, a show stopper.

We made lots of interesting liason's with some very interesting people.
It was great to talk to Christopher Bloomquist from New York, The team from the Mill House &thank you to the ladies from the Carpenters Daughter also from Wellington who invited us to their show, very creative and colourful.

We absolutely loved Trelise Cooper's show which we caught on the big screen.

We had a chance to have a look at the cutting room & have a few Moet's.

All in all a great day & always the feed back we get from every one is,
Very inventive, clever & creative. Our launch is very exciting

Day 1 09

We went for a walk to clear our heads first thing this morning  ( a few too many champers the night before) and stopped into the Habitat Site - there looked like a few of the women had a sex change! (apparently men were allowed to put the floor down! and then the girls are on). We finally arrived at the show at about 9.30am and there were people everywhere we were frantically trying to get ourselves sorted. After that frantic start and heaps of positive feedback overall we had an absolutely fantastic day. Caught a few of the runway shows - Basquesse, Annah Stretton and Alexandra Owen but the real star of the show is our wee Rarotongan trolley! This is our only form of transport but we have our eye on the Audi (apparently one of the drivers is going to smoke the wheels for us!)

Packing in & Party out

Packing in & Party out!

Brian & Gordon, absolute legends!!! Nothing like the Old Boys club network to get a gal out of trouble.
Brian Parker, father of Greg Von Heraud Parker & chief engineer & his childhood friend Gordon, came to the rescue of the fair maidens of Von Avi. It was a big day, but it was a great team effort & a fantastic result.
We feel very at home at the Viaduct, Jane has her eye on the Ulysses Mega Boat to expand  her Portfolio from her section in Winton.

Where's a taxi when you need one.?
Having troubles hooking up to the net in the Luxury Apt, left us with 15mins to look fabulous for the grand opening. To make matters worse we hiked it down to the street & couldn't for the life of me find a Taxi!!!
Not wanting to miss a moment of Fashion Week, & in a moment of intensity & rescue remedy, I unpeeled my 5 inch heels & high tailed it across the pontoon in the fish nets! With a quick recovery aka 2 glasses of Moet, Jane is now still talking to me & we had a great night meeting the faces & cameras of Fashion Week. ( Thank you to Charlie & Peter from Remix for our close ups)
Congratulations to 27 Names & Stolen Girlfriends Club for winning the Air New Zealand Innovation Awards.
Thank you to all those that supported our entry.
Looking forward to kick off tomorrow.

All packed up and heading north!

Von Avi are happy to announce after a big week in the media & lots of last minuet arrangements we are ready for our Launch! Bring on the Bubbles!!!
We had stories this week in The Southland Times, The Sun, The Otago Daily Times & on Radio Wanaka. The local support has been outstanding & everyone in town is a buzz with the Air New Zealand Innovation Awards & our hand bags.
Jane thought she had lost her passport but it turns out she had already packed it! A supper organized Handbag Wrangler is what every good Handbag Designer needs on their debut launch.
Thank you to everyone that voted & took the time to watch all the movies.
Better dust off the good threads & head north!

Innovation Awards

Well, we designed an Iconic outfit & made a 2min movie for the Runway to the Runway Innovation awards. It really was a mission getting it all together with everything else happening.
Thanks to all those people that helped. Natalie Norman, Teresa Goodwin, Joss Harris, Judy. Coco Bella, Robert Brook & all the supportive bystanders. Thanks to Annie Trengrove for the Bubbles & to Waiwera Estate for the Pinot Noir.
Now its time to vote, so go to www.airnzfashionweek.co.nz & vote for Von Avi & enjoy the movie.

Two Weeks to go

Well it has been another busy week getting ready.
I’m now sewing my clothes to wear at the show, Natalie Norman & I have been busy putting together a great design selection to wear. Natalie is very gifted pattern maker & also a whizz on the machine, my sewing skills only get me so far! Between the two of us I’m sure my wardrobe will be looking fantastic.

Jane and Odessa have been putting in the hours tweaking all the final details.

Meanwhile the boys out at the Airport have been really showing off some talent with their final run on our Range of Hand Bags. We feel very confident that every one will be very taken back by such an innovative new idea. Everyone that we have been dealing with has really been amazed with our new designs.

Now its down to ironing out all the paperwork & booking wrap party tickets......

A Busy Week

We have volunteered our services to help build the habitat house that will be erected at the Viaduct Village during Fashion Week. It sounds like an interesting experience, lucky there are not many earthquakes in Auckland.
The count down is really on, our team is growing by the day, getting our range together.
Without a doubt there are always obstacles to overcome, & blocks that present themselves, but I believe with a positive & enthusiastic outlook & a supportive team on board anything is possible. Thank you to all those that melted the walls this week! Read More...

The Photo Shoot

We had a very successful photo & film shoot last night at Wanaka Airport.
Our Model Madi Chamberlain looked stunning in her provocative futuristic out fit.
We were very lucky with the weather & our support crew were out in force.
The one thing that really made me think, was that in deciding to manufacture in New Zealand, avoiding the temptation to make our products cheaper on the shelf by manufacturing off shore, this provides so many opportunities to many many local & nation wide businesses.
Involved last night we had photographers, videographers, hairdressers, makeup artists, set designers & art directors, graphic designers, local school students studying drama & many more local people experiencing an event. It was a very rewarding experience & we look forward to sharing our media footage with you all. We all wait with much excitement for the “Face of Von Avi”!
Special thanks to Theresa Goodwin, Joss Harris & Coco Bella for a fabulous pair of shoes!

Gearing up for the Shoot

We received our “The Guide” to Air New Zealand Fashion Week magazines today. Great reading, all our team & support crew have been pouring over the pages.
Theresa Goodwin from Fair Hair Salon is very excited about creating a fabulous do for Madi’s hair. Theresa organizes & manages the Wanaka Wearable Creations Show that is held here every two years & loves getting involved with putting her creative imagination to the Runway! Teresa is also a very talented singer.
We have the team at May E Machine working on a new metal belt for our photo shoot, & it is looking fantastic.
Hayley, from Hayley Inder design has chosen some lovely pieces of jewelry from her new collection for Madi to wear.
It has been a very busy week & looking like a busy weekend ahead.

The Count Down

Five weeks to Fashion Week! Thank you to everyone for your amazing support & great feed back!
Our poster photography shoot is planned for next Sunday 23rd.
Thanks to Robert Brook for allowing us the use of his Mustang Fighter Plane.
May E Machine have been very ingenious with their manufacturing process with our handbags.
Thank You!

20/8/09

We have created a fantastic dress for our model to wear for the photo shoot on Sunday.
Natalie Norman has been working with me, designing, pattern making & sewing, showing her skilled eye for detail & design.
Our model, Madi Chamberlain, is a dedicated dancer of Hip Hop & Jazz. Madi also teaches Hip Hop at the Dance Wanaka Studio where she trains.
Anna Allan will be taking the photos, she has won an incredible 24 Kodak Gold Awards, so we are very much looking forward to seeing everything coming together.
The weather in Wanaka has finally hit “spring” after the longest winter I can remember!
